Splunk's main service collects and analyzes large amounts of data generated by machines. It connects directly to applications and devices via a standard API. It was created in response to the need for executives outside of a company's IT department to have access to comprehensible and actionable data reporting. Splunk Enterprise Security (ES) is a security information and event management (SIEM) system that gives you insight into machine data created by security technologies like network, endpoint, access, malware, vulnerability, and identity. It is a premium application that is licensed separately from the core of Splunk. It was the fourth highest-paying corporation for employees in the United States in April 2017, according to Glassdoor.

Splunk has announced a relationship with the McLaren Formula One team, beginning in 2020, in which it will support the team as well as provide data analysis and insight into racing performance. Before becoming McLaren Racing's official technology partner in February 2020, Splunk worked with McLaren Racing for several years, examining the performance data pulled from the almost 300 sensors on every racecar. Splunk's Data-to-Everything Platform was deployed across McLaren Racing and the McLaren Group as a result of the agreement. This includes interpreting data from McLaren's e-sports team using Splunk.
