SDI (Service Desk Institute) is a professional organization founded in 1988 and operating worldwide for individuals and professionals who work in the IT support and service industry. SDI has dedicated the last 30 years to guide and inspire the individuals involved in service desks and the ITSM community. SDI performs various tasks like delivering information to improve the knowledge of help desk professionals through training and IT support, community-based forums, and events.  SDI was founded by Howard Kendall and was named The Help Desk User Group during its inception. The organization took a rebranding effort in April 2008 and named the Service Desk Institute. It is the global community and network for service desk professionals worldwide. Its goal is to help service desk individuals increase their knowledge and skills and enhance their careers as IT service professionals. 

SDI has a globally accepted certification program called the Service Desk Certification (SDC), a one-of-a-kind certification scheme because it is the only benchmarking scheme based on best-practice industry standards explicitly designed to validate the service desk quality. The organization has its mission to inspire the service desks to be brilliant.
