The SANS Institute is a private organization based in the United States that provides cybersecurity and information security training, education, and certifications. The organization was established in 1989 and, since then, has been serving globally. SANS is the abbreviation of SysAdmin, Audit, Network, and Security. The topics for the information and cybersecurity courses of the SANS institute include cyber and network defenses, penetration testing, digital forensics, incident response, and auditing. Additionally, the courses also include industrial control systems, cloud security, offensive operations, and cybersecurity leadership. These training and certification courses are developed by industry leaders who work in their respective fields of information security. The certification program of SANS institute is offered through GIAC (Global Information Assurance Certification). The GIAC was formed in 1999 and is an independent entity granting cybersecurity and information security certifications. The SANS Technology Institute, which is an accredited institution based on the SANS training and GIAC certifications, was established in 2006 for the better implementation and operation of the training and certification process of the SANS Institute. Most of the staff members of SANS are not its employees but other industry professionals with many years of experience in cybersecurity. In addition to its training and certification programs, SANS Institute sponsors an internet monitoring system called the Internet Storm Center, which is staffed by a worldwide security professional community. Other programs of the SANS Institute include the SANS Reading Room, a research archive of research documents, and information security policies. SANS is also one of the founding members of the Center for Internet Security.
