The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) was established in 2000 as a non-profit, non-advocacy membership organization. It gives privacy professionals a place to share best practices, monitors trends, advances privacy management issues, standardizes privacy professional designations, and provides education and advice on career opportunities in the field of data privacy. The IAPP provides a comprehensive educational and professional development program that includes privacy training, certification programs, newsletters, and annual conferences. Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is the company's headquarters. The IAPP is in charge of creating and launching global information privacy credentialing programs. The American National Standards Institute(ANSI) has accredited the CIPM, CIPP/E, CIPP/US, and CIPT certificates under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for Personnel Certification Bodies 17024:2012. These accreditations have been named "the gold standard" for confirming privacy awareness.
Via the IAPP Westin Research Center, the IAPP produces original research. Each year, two privacy scholars are chosen for a fellowship to work on privacy research projects with the IAPP's vice president of research and education. Topics are chosen to aid in the growth and advancement of the privacy profession, as well as to increase awareness of major privacy issues. Research projects include The FTC Casebook, Privacy Industry Index (PII), Privacy Professionals Salary Survey, The IAPP annual surveys from the member, and IAPP-EY Annual Privacy Governance Report 2015. Seven annual conferences are held by the IAPP: IAPP Global Privacy Summit, IAPP Privacy. Security. Risk. (P.S.R.), IAPP Canada Privacy Symposium, IAPP Europe Data Protection Congress, IAPP Data Protection Intensives, IAPP Asia Privacy Forum, and IAPP ANZ Summit.
