The Global Association of Risk Professionals (GARP) is a membership organization for risk managers. Setting standards, training, education, business networking, and supporting risk management activities are just some of its services. It was founded in 1996. It has offices in London, Washington, D.C., Beijing, and Hong Kong. The Financial Risk Manager (FRM) certification is GARP's most well-known fundamental certificate program. Marc Lore and Lev Borodovsky formed GARP in 1996. They had been meeting once a week in a New York pub to discuss their chosen field with other risk colleagues and agreed that a more organized organization would be beneficial to other risk professionals. They had 250 participants from 23 countries six months later. Regional directors quickly formed local chapters worldwide, each with its own set of services for local members. Lore and Borodovsky launched the Financial Risk Manager (FRM) certification in 1997, a year after they formed GARP. GARP estimates that it will have over 250,000 members in 190 countries and territories by 2020.
The Financial Risk Manager (FRM) is a GARP-issued specialist designation. The FRM, along with the PRM given by the Professional Risk Managers' International Association, is a well-respected credential for financial risk professionals. FRMs operate with major banks, insurance companies, accounting firms, regulatory authorities, and asset management firms and have specialized expertise in risk assessment. The FRM program is organized around the four main strategic risk management disciplines: market risk, credit risk, operational risk, and investment management. Prior to being certified, candidates must pass two FRM examinations and have two years of appropriate practical work experience. Several "partner university" services and syllabi use the FRM curriculum. The Financial Risk Manager (FRM), the Energy Risk Professional (ERP), and the Sustainability and Climate Risk (SCR) are the three role-based risk certifications offered by GARP. It also provides two foundational risk management courses with its Foundations in Financial Risk and Regulation services.
