About cima

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is a professional body based in the United Kingdom that provides training and certification in management accounting and related fields. It appeals to industrial accountants and offers ongoing assistance and training to its members. CIMA is one of the UK and Ireland's specialist accounting organizations. It places a special focus on the advancement of the management accounting profession. With 110,493 members and 117,817 students in 2018, CIMA is the world's largest management accounting body. The International Federation of Accountants is also a member of CIMA. The  CIMA was established in March 1919 as the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants by a group of legal practitioners and businessmen who wanted to create an accounting approach that would meet the demands of a rapidly evolving business environment. Large-scale are posing unparalleled management challenges. Employers needed a different type of in-house accountant that could provide a better cost and operations analysis to inform performance management. Lord Leverhulme, who became president of CIMA, was among the first industrialists to support the new institute.

Prospective members must pass a set of qualifying exams administered by CIMA. Via its research base, it supports local education, training, management growth operations and new techniques. It disseminates management accounting practices through publications and other media-related activities. CIMA has been involved in recent educational and vocational programs in countries that were once part of the Soviet Union. It publishes a monthly journal called 'Financial Management,' which is distributed free to members and registered students. The CGMA classification was established by CIMA and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Chartered Global Management Accountant). The designation honors the brightest and most dedicated management accountants. With over 150,000 designees, the CGMA is the most commonly held management accounting qualification in the world. It is educationally equivalent to a master's degree. The classification is based on comprehensive global research to ensure maximum relevance with employers and the development of the most in-demand skills.
