BlackBerry Limited is a Canadian multinational business software and Internet of Things company. The BlackBerry brand of interactive switches, smartphones, and tablets was initially known as Research in Motion (RIM). It became a software and service company under CEO John S. Chen. Different firms, carmakers, and government agencies are using their products. The solutions include BlackBerryCyber-safety solutions based on artificial intelligence, the BlackBerry AtHoc platform for emergency communications (ECS), QNX real-time, and BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BlackBerry Unified Endpoint Manager), a platform for Unified Endpoint Management (UEM). Mike Lazaridis and Douglas Fregin established blackBerry as Research In Motion in 1984. Lazaridis, at the time, was a student of engineering at Waterloo University, while Mr. Fregin was a student of engineering at Windsor University. In 1988, RIM became the world's first developer of Wireless Data Technology in North America and the first external company in Scandinavia to develop wireless data communications network connectivity products for Mobitex.

RIM presented the DigiSync KeyKode Reader in 1990. RIM launched the first Mobitex Protocol Converter in 1991. In 1992, RIM introduced the first Mobitex POS solution, a Protocol Converter box that interfaced with existing POS devices for wireless communication. In 1993 the RIMGate, the first Mobitex x.25 gateway, was introduced by RIM. In the same year, RIM launched a wireless modem with RIM modem firmware, Ericsson Mobidem AT, and Intel. RIM launched the first mobile point-of-sale terminal from Mobitex in 1994. In the same year, RIM received the Emmy Award and the KPMG High Technology Prize for Technical Innovation. The first Type II PCMCIA radio modem for Mobitex introduced Freedom in 1995 by RIM. In 1995, RIM was funded through a private placement in a private company through Canadian institutional and venture capital investors. Working Ventures Canadian Fund Inc. led the first round of C$5,000,000 with the profit being invested in developing RIM's payment system's two-way hardware and software.
